We Greatly Appreciate Your Time!

Thank you for volunteering for the 7th Annual South Shore Dockside Food and Wine Festival on Saturday, October 18, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the South Shore Harbour Resort and Marina.

Q. How will I remember what time to show up and what my job is?
You will receive several emails prior to the Festival with updates and highlights as well as a package at the Volunteer training meetings with a Wine & Dine ticket, reserved parking pass and a Festival map.

Q. What happens if I can't make my shift?
Please call or email us as soon as possible so we can arrange to replace you. It takes approximately 300 volunteers to make the Festival a success.

Q. How do I get to the Festival
A map with directions is available on the Festival website, under festival information.

Q. What time should I arrive at the Festival?
Please arrive at the Volunteer Tent 30 minutes before your shift begins.

Q. What should I wear?
You'll likely be on your feet for at least four hours depending on what your job is so wear comfortable clothing and shoes. The Festival T-shirts will be white and printed with the Festival artwork for 2008.

Q. Where do I park?
There will be a limited number of reserved parking spaces available for volunteers in the underground level of the Marina View parking garage at 2600 South Shore Blvd. If the reserved parking spaces are full please park in another space in the Marina View parking garage of the Marina Plaza parking garage at 2450 South Shore Blvd or the Hotel parking garage at 2500 South Shore Blvd or the Marina One parking garage at 2525 South Shore Blvd. All reserved parking passes will be given out at the Volunteer training meetings.

Q. How will I know where I'm supposed to be after I check-in at the Volunteer Tent?
You'll receive a Festival map and directions when you check-in.

Q. How do I get my Volunteer T-shirt?
All volunteer shirts will be given out upon check-in at the Volunteer Tent at the Festival. Dressing rooms will be available for your convenience.

Q. How do I get my Festival Pass?
All Festival passes will be given out upon check-in at the Volunteer Tent at the Festival.

Q. Where do I get my VIP Festival admission ticket?
All VIP Festival admission tickets will be given out upon check-in at the Volunteer Tent at the Festival.

Q. How do I get my ticket to the Wine & Dine?
All Wine & Dine tickets will be given out at the Volunteer training meetings.

Q. When will the drawing be held for the signed festival posters?
The drawing will be held shortly after the Festival with winners notified by email.

Q. How do I refer friends and family if they want to volunteer?
Ask them to go to the Festival website and register just as you did. We will contact them as soon as possible.

Q. I want to volunteer and work with my husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, brother, sister, son, daughter, grandparent, cousin, neighbor, friend, etc. How do I request that we be put together?
Just let us know when you register or give us a call and we'll do our best to honor all requests.

Q. Where do I get bottled water for me to drink?
Water will be available in coolers at each wine pouring station, at the Volunteer Tent and at the East and West End bars. You must have your Festival Pass to get free water at the East and West End bars.

Q. What's the difference between a Tent Captain and an Event Captain?
A Tent Captain is assigned to a specific tent and is essentially the tent manager. An Event Captain manages a larger area of the Festival and assists Tent Captains and other sponsors, exhibitors, restaurants, bars and volunteers who are not in one of the five large pavillions.

Q. What do I do if I need more wine, ice, beer, water, soft drinks, etc?
Please let your Tent Captain or Event Captain know and he/she will arrange to get what you need.

Q. What happens if a wine glass breaks?
There will be a dust pan and broom in each pavillion for cleanup. Notify a Tent Captain or Event Captain for a ticket to receive a replacement glass at the Rotary/Ticket booth or the Main or West gates.

Q. What do I do if a guest asks me to pour wine in something other than a Festival glass?
TABC rules require that the only container we can pour wine into is an official Festival glass. If they insist or want you to pour wine directly into their mouth to get around the wine glass requirement, please see a Tent or Event Captain for assistance.

Q. What do I do if a guest appears to be intoxicated?
Notify a Tent Captain or Event Captain and they will contact security. Please do not serve anything to anyone who appears to be intoxicated.

Q. What do I do if a guest becomes injured during the Festival?
Notify a Tent or Event Captain immediately and they will arrange for the guest to be taken to the First Aid Tent in the Harbour Club Circle.

Q. What do I do if someone does not have a wristband and wants to be served alcohol?
Everyone inside the Festival gates will be required to have one of the following two wristbands:

  • A wristband for guests over 21 who can be served alcohol
  • A wristband for guests under 21 who cannot be served alcohol

If someone does not have one of these two wristbands they are likely a gatecrasher. Please notify a Tent or Event Captain immediately and they will call security. Please do not serve anything to anyone who does not have a wristband.

Q. What kind of training do I need to pour wine or serve beer
Everyone who serves alcohol must attend one of the TABC training sessions prior to the Festival. Training is scheduled for Tuesday, October 14, from 5:30 to 6:30 and Wednesday, October 15, from 6:30 to 7:30 at the South Shore Harbour Hotel.

Q. What happens if I miss the training?
Unfortunately, TABC rules dictate that you cannot serve alcohol unless you attend one of these training sessions.

Q. I've taken the training before and poured wine in the past so why do I need to take the training again?
TABC rules require that everyone who does not have a TABC license to serve alcohol be trained before each event.

Q. How do I collect the tickets for tasting and other beverages?
In previous years we sold small roll tickets for all beverages and food and collected them at each point of sale. This year we are upgrading to a simple punch card ticket for all beverages. All the food will be sold directly by the participating restaurants who will accept cash and credit cards only. We'll go over the details of the punch card tickets at the two TABC training sessions.

Q. Are there any Festival rules that I should be aware of?
Yes. The Festival rules are as follows.

  • Be prepared to be carded if you appear 35 years of age or younger
  • Must be 21 years of age to taste and/or buy wine, beer, or alcohol
